Students are recommended to the scholarship committee by faculty members in their
instrument area. Decisions are based on performance ability and academic background.
The amount of scholarship can range from $1,000 to $4,000. The average award is
approximately $2,000. The school of music is allotted a set number of waivers
(95 per academic year). They are awarded by the Student Awards Committee
and must be accompanied by a minimum scholarship award of $1,000. An Academic
Competitive Exemption (known as a waiver) waives the non-resident portion
of the student's tuition, allowing them to pay Texas resident tuition rates for the
year the waiver is awarded. For more information concerning financial aid please

Only one Graduate Assistantship is available throught the percussion
studio to outstanding applicants interested in pursuing the Master of Music
or DMA degree in percussion performance. teaching assistantships (TA's) are
responsible for one or more of the following: private instruction, assisting with the
teaching of the percussion techniques class, directing the Steel Pan Ensemble, and
assisting the director of percussion studies. The full-time TA position recipient
receives an out-of-state tuition waiver and approximately $940 monthly compensation
for a 20 hour teaching load. Assistantships include health benefits. Drumline
Assistantships are also available through
Long Horn Band.
